A communications method includes sending from a base station one or more parameters and/or settings for a terminal to select which of plural antennas of the terminal to use transmitting signals to the base station. A base station transmits to terminals one or more such parameters and/or settings for use in the adaptive antenna selection algorithm to select antennas for transmitting signals to the base station.

A mobile communications terminal, comprising a transmitter configured to provide signals for uplink transmission in a network, a plurality of antennas configured to cooperate with the transmitter to transmit signals for communications with a base station in the network, a non-transitory memory configured to store antenna selection instructions for use in selecting which of the antennas to cooperate with the transmitter to transmit signals, a processor configured to execute antenna selection instructions from the memory to determine selecting of respective antennas, a receiver configured to receive from a base station signals representing one or more parameters and/or settings for use in antenna selection instructions executed by the processor in determining selecting of respective antennas for transmission, wherein the parameters and/or settings include a maximum swapping rate for antennas, and a monitor configured to monitor operative characteristics of the terminal, wherein: the non-transitory memory is configured to store antenna selection instructions that include an adaptive antenna selection algorithm, andthe processor is configured to: compare the monitored operative characteristics to a given condition,when the monitored operative characteristics satisfy the given condition, determine whether a minimum time corresponding to the max swapping rate has passed since a previous antenna swap, andwhen the minimum time has passed, execute antenna selection instructions to select respective antennas by the adaptive antenna selection algorithm based on the monitored operative characteristics and the received one or more parameters or settings.
