PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detector capable of automatically self teaching a threshold level for detection according to variations in light receiving quantity. SOLUTION: A fiber sensor has a fiber for light projection and that for light reception. The fiber sensor is composed so that an output signal (analog signal) with a level according to the amount of penetration of a work into the optical path (detection region) between a light projection element and a light-receiving element formed via both the fibers is outputted from a light reception circuit to a CPU. The CPU sets a threshold level for detection, based on the maximum and minimum values of the light reception signal level sampled within a period for each prescribed threshold update period.
