<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly precisely transfer data at high speed in accordance with an increase in an amount of transfer data and a request for two-way communication. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus uses a replacement unit freely attached to or detached from the main body of the apparatus. The substrate 60 of the replacement unit has a memory 61 and holds data specific to the unit. The main body of the image forming apparatus reads information stored in the memory 61, determines the propriety of the replacement unit or alters process conditions. In connection parts 51 and 52 where the replacement unit and the main body of the apparatus are connected, a plurality of transfer paths (in this case, two) are formed, and a path for passing transfer data is predetermined. When data is transferred using the predetermined path, the CPU 72 of the main body permits an operation using the replacement unit.
