PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the end of paper sheets by automatically adjusting the quantity of light of a LED for each paper sheet without shortening the life of the LED irrespective of whether the paper sheet is white or colored. SOLUTION: In this paper conveying device, a CIS sensor 21 is disposed in a conveying path 19, and the position of the paper sheets 20 is detected. A control part 23 determines the position several times for the same paper sheet, changes and emits the emitted quantity of light of the LED 40 of the CIS sensor 21 by the determination of the position performed several times, and determines the optimum value of the quantity of light of the LED 40 according to the different output of the CIS sensor 21 according to a variation in the different quantity of light.
