A surface light source and a driving method thereof are provided to reduce the volume of a driving part and slim a backlight unit. A light source body(110) has a closed discharge space(150). In the discharge space(150) of the discharge channel(120) inside, the discharge gas is injected. A plurality of discharge channels(120) are formed by a plurality of side walls(140) placed between a first substrate, and a second substrate. Two or more electrode portions(160) authorizes the discharge voltage inside the light source body. A driving unit applies an AC type first voltage, and a DC type second voltage.
