A grill heater apparatus of a microwave oven and a control method thereof are provided to perfectly cook foodstuff by operating a lower grill heater arranged in a lower portion of a cavity even when a user has failed to turn the foodstuff upside down. A grill heater apparatus of a microwave oven(100) comprises a door(110); a control panel(160) mounted on one side of the door; a cavity assembly(300) having an internal accommodation space; a cooking chamber(200) formed in the cavity assembly; an upper grill heater(600) arranged at a top surface of the cavity assembly so as to heat foodstuff; a lower grill heater arranged at a bottom surface of the cooking chamber so as to heat foodstuff; and a controller for controlling the upper grill heater and the lower grill heater. The controller senses opening of the door after operation of the upper grill heater, and operates the lower grill heater in accordance with whether the door is opened/closed.
