A locking device for a container is provided, preferably for a waste container. The locking device keeps the lid (12) of the container (18) closed when the container (18) is knocked over on its side, with a sudden jerking or jarring motion, such as by impact with the ground, to prevent spillage of its contents. The locking device, however, allows the lid (12) to open when the waste container is tipped over, preferably in a forward direction, by a dumping operation. |
