PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine operating on different fuels and capable of operating in different modes with different air fuel ratios.SOLUTION: There is provided improvement of a bi-fuel engine adjusted to burn hydrogen as a primary fuel and gasoline as a secondary fuel at various acceptable air fuel ratios. The engine is operated to burn a hydrogen fuel at certain acceptable air fuel ratios in a charged mode and in a lean mode in which NOX emissions do not relatively occur. When output or acceleration is requested, the engine is operated to inject relatively small amounts of gasoline. The engine is controlled to operate at a stoichiometric air fuel ratio at which a catalytic converter can best reduce harmful emissions into the environment, and this results in a fuel mixture that prevents increases in NOX emissions. By injecting a gasoline fuel to a gaseous hydrogen fuel, temperature of these fuels is significantly reduced to eliminate a backfiring tendency. The engine has a safety function of shutting off a hydrogen fuel when leakage of hydrogen is detected, and is operated using a gasoline fuel as a backup fuel.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
