PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer and a printing method capable of relatively quickly stopping a carriage at the time of the abnormal load occurrence such as medium jam while keeping the occurrence frequency of erroneous detection of a speed reduction error of the carriage to the low level.SOLUTION: In the case of any time of power-on, returning from a power-saving mode and between pages of sheets (positive determination in any of S11, S12, S13), speed measurement for measuring a speed of a no-load region (fixed speed region) is executed by moving a carriage in the scan direction at a speed in printing, and the worst value Vw (lowest speed) of speed reduction is stored (S14). A threshold Vs (=Vw-a) is set to the lower speed side by a prescribed margin a with respect to the worst value Vw (S15). Under a use environment with a speed variation factor such as vibration, the threshold is set to be relatively lower in comparison to the normal environment without vibration or the like.
