<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protection controller and an automatic monitoring method thereof having an automatic monitoring function capable of controlling the time of an alarm output corresponding to the type and degree of a failure. <P>SOLUTION: This protection controller is constituted as follows: some trouble of a component or the like is detected by a trouble detector 13. The detected trouble is observed for a specific period and the presence or absence of occurrence of the trouble is judged by judging whether or not the value calculated by a prescribed function corresponding to the trouble detection exceeds a judgment value Tk by a trouble occurrence judgment device 14. A plurality of preset periods and the judgment value in the set period is set by a set device. If the present time is included in the set period, the judgment value in the set period is selected, if the current time is not included in any of the set periods, a judgment value is selected and output by a judgment value selector 19.
