A mobile communication system in which wastful power consumption is prevented when mobile communication is performed using a shared channel by making efficient the transmission timing of a data transmission rate request value thereby achieving small power consumption. A mobile station unit (102) of this mobile communication system comprises a CIR measuring section (306) for measuring the CIR of a signal received from a base station unit (101), and a rate request value determining section (307) for determining a data transmission rate request value corresponding to the CIR measurement data. The mobile station unit (102) further comprises a CRC section (304) for detecting an error of a received signal, and a rate request value transmission control section (308) for determining the difference between the average data transmission rate from the base station unit (101) and the data transmission rate request value when no error is detected and transmitting the data transmission rate request value to the base station unit (101) only when the difference exceeds a threshold value.
