PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting method of a high-pressure mercury lamp capable of lowering discharge pulse voltage at lighting startup even if an input of an AC power supply is off. SOLUTION: The high-pressure mercury lamp 11 provided with a pair of electrodes 30a, 30b arranged opposed to each other at a discharge container 22 provided with sealing parts 19, 21 at both ends, is started to light by impressing discharge pulse voltage between the electrodes. An induction coil 34 is arranged so as to have its high-frequency magnetic field reach the high-pressure mercury lamp, and high-frequency power is conducted to the induction coil, before the discharge pulse voltage is impressed, so that temperatures of the electrode and the mercury sealed in the discharge container are raised to predetermined values.
