1. A point of sale (POS) terminal, comprising:
a reader having at least two interfaces for reading data from payment devices, the at least two interfaces including interfaces of at least two types; a POS terminal processor; and a POS terminal memory holding instructions for execution by the POS terminal processor, wherein the instructions, when executed by POS terminal processor, cause the POS terminal to: receive first transaction data from a first payment device via a first protocol through a first of the interfaces for the conduct of a first transaction, the first transaction data being in a particular format; extract first payment data from the first transaction data; forward the first payment data for approval of the first transaction; receive second transaction data from a second payment device via a second protocol through a second of the interfaces for the conduct of a second transaction, the second transaction data being in the same particular format; extract second payment data from the second transaction data; and forward the second payment data for approval of the second transaction.
