A packet transmission system comprising a transmission-side apparatus (10) and a receiving-side apparatus (20). The transmission-side apparatus (10) includes a transmission processing section (13) for dividing data to be transmitted into a plurality of data packets of a specified length and transmitting the data packets one by one to the receiving-side apparatus (20) through a first signal line and a retransmission processing sub-section (14) for confirming the transmission of a data packet to the receiving-side apparatus (20) and instructing the transmission processing section (13) to retransmit a data packet if it is not transmitted. The receiving-side apparatus (20) includes an error check sub-section (23) for detecting a transmission error, if any, of a received data packet and a retransmission requesting section (24) for transmitting a signal indicative of abnormal reception to the transmission-side apparatus (10) through a second signal line if a transmission error is detected, otherwise transmitting a signal indicative of normal reception to the transmission-side apparatus (10) through a third signal line. Thus, retransmission control processing of a packet is realized by means of simple hardware without employing software.
