A machine (10) for applying fibre reinforced composite material (19) to a work surface (15) comprises a base frame (16), a head (11) mounted on the base frame, means for controlling the movement of the head (11) along plural axes with respect to the surface (15), and a presser assembly (29) mounted on the head. The presser assembly comprises a housing (34), including means (47) for affixing the housing to the head, and a plurality of wafer-like plates (55, 56) having flat parallel opposite faces stacked in adjacent, face-to-face array in the housing (34). The plates have a biasing portion (59) extending into the housing, means (63) being provided for independently guiding the plates for parallel movement with respect to the housing, and spring means in the housing is provided for yieldably biasing the plates outwardly of the housing, so that a common workpiece presser edge (60), provided by the adjacent edges of the plates, extend from the housing. Preferably the spring means comprises a fluid chamber and a flexible membrane extending across the chamber in contact with the biasing portion (59) of the plates, so that when the chamber is pressurised, the plates undergo parallel slip to conform to the contour of the workpiece surface (15).
