PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient method for producing a high purity fullerene in a high yield by a simple method and step, a small amount of a solvent and a reagent. SOLUTION: The fullerene is produced by passing a fullerene mixture solution through an activated carbon layer. The activated carbon is produced from a vegetable matter or a mineral matter, has a fine pore volume with the pore diameter of 10-50Åof 200 mm<SP>3</SP>/g or more and has the half-width of the peak measured by X-ray diffraction of 9.8°or less. The powdery activated carbon is produced by a chemical activation method, by crushing activated carbon granules produced by the chemical activation method or by crushing fibrous activated carbon produced by a gas activation method.
