In alternative embodiments, the invention provides methods and industrial processes for generating free fatty acids and/or fatty acid derivatives from a feedstock comprising phospholipids by combining the feedstock with one or more reactants to form a reaction mixture and reacting the mixture at a temperature and pressure sufficient to provide for the separation of the free fatty acids from their phosphatide structures.

A process for the production of free fatty acids and/or free fatty acid derivatives, from a lipid-containing feedstock comprising phospholipids comprising the steps of: a. providing a feedstock comprising phospholipids, wherein optionally the feedstock further comprises non-phospholipid lipids or, lipids other than phospholipids, and optionally the non-phospholipid lipids comprise glycerides, and optionally the glycerides are triglycerides; b. providing a reaction mixture comprising the feedstock and a solvent and, optionally, CO2; and c. reacting the reaction mixture at a temperature, pressure and for a time that is sufficient to provide for the solvolysis, esterification, transesterification, acidification, or any combination thereof, of substantially all of the phospholipids and, if present, the lipids in the feedstock, wherein optionally the time is between about 0 to about 24 hours, between about 0 to about 12 hours, or between about 1 hour and about 8 hours, between about 3 hours and 5 hours, between about 5 minutes and one hour, between about 2 minutes to about 20 minutes, or between about 0 minutes to about 1 minute, wherein optionally the solvolysis is an alcoholysis, an ammonolysis, a hydrolysis, or a combination thereof.
