Diagnostics for the complications of diabetes or renal insufficiency containing as the main ingredient a reaction product formed in the latter stage of the Maillard reaction in vivo which relates causally to various tissue disorders and the structure of which is specified by taking the situation of the prior art into consideration. These diagnostics are characterized by containing as the main ingredient a pyridinium compound represented by general formula (I).
