PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device that enables an easy character input. SOLUTION: A portable communication terminal 10 includes a CPU 28, and a character table T1 stores a character group classified under ten groups such that a plurality of characters including a representative character belong to each group. The operation of every one of representative buttons B1 to B12 is detected by a system controller 38. The CPU 28 assigns the ten representative characters belonging to the ten respective groups to the respective representative buttons B1 to B10. The group that corresponds to a detection result by the system controller 38 related to the assignment is identified, and twelve member characters belonging to the identified group are assigned to the respective representative buttons B1 to B12. The CPU 28 designates the character that corresponds to a detection result by the system controller 38 related to the assignment as an input character, and restarts the first assignment processing.
