PROCESS FOR PRODUCING MgB2 SUPERCONDUCTING WIRE ROD

This invention provides a process for producing an MgB₂ superconducting wire rod, comprising filling powder of an MgB₂ superconductor into a pipe followed by wire working, and an MgB₂ superconducting wire rod produced by the process. The production process is characterized in that, due to lowered crystallinity, the powder of the MgB₂ superconductor used has high critical current density (Jc) and excellent grain-boundary bonding properties. In the production process, an MgB₂ superconducting wire rod having a Jc value, which is satisfactorily high for practical use, and homogeneous over a long length can be produced by an ex-situ process using as a sheath material a material having a composition suitable for service environment.
