Awakening method is changed depending on the level of sleepiness of a vehicle driver, or an awakening method by smell or vibration suitable for each individual is selected carefully depending on the preference or constitution of each vehicle driver. The awakening retainer comprises a vehicle driver identifying section (14) for identifying a vehicle driver, a section (15) for registering/storing the taste information of a vehicle driver, a vibration generating section (17) and a smell generating section (18) for urging the vehicle driver to awake by generating smell and/or vibration, and a section (11) for controlling the vibration generating section (17) and the smell generating section (18) depending on the preference information of the vehicle driver identified at the vehicle driver identifying section (14). Furthermore, a section (19) for detecting the level of sleepiness based on the detection value from a sensor for detecting sleepiness of the vehicle driver is provided.
