PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an afterimage phenomenon in a plasma display panel and uniform display intensity of each discharge cell. SOLUTION: A device includes a plasma display panel with a plurality of discharge cells having display electrode pairs composed of scanning electrodes and sustain electrodes and a sustain pulse generation circuit, which has a power recovery circuit for rise or fall of sustain pulses by resonating capacitances and inductances between electrodes of the display electrode pairs, and which generates the sustain pulses the number of which is based on luminance weight within a plurality of subfield sustaining periods having initialization, writing and sustaining periods arranged. The sustain pulse generation circuit switches and generates at least two kinds of sustain pulses with different rising gradents, and also the sustain pulse having a steep rise from the latter half of the sustain period to the last other than the last sustain pulse within the sustain period is continuously generated by a predetermined number according to the total number of the sustain pulse of the sustain period.
