PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lens shift mechanism capable of avoiding decrease in the quantity of projected light by limiting the shift range of a projection lens, and to provide a projection-type image display unit. SOLUTION: When the projection lens is moved sidewise while kept positioned on the upper or lower side, the projection lens can be moved sidewise up to a certain range. However, the movement restricting projection 54 of a vertically movable base 5 comes into contact with the 45-degree oblique side 1c of the fixed base 1. After this contact, movements in the leftward or rightward direction and the upward or downward direction, which are limiting directions, are limited.
