An apparatus and method for the sampling of high viscosity hydrocarbons in a wellbore involving deploying a tool 110 which includes; a perforating mechanism, means for enhancing the mobility of the downhole fluids and a sampling port. The perforating mechanism, such as a drill 124', is deployed through a sidewall of the tool to create a hole 129 through the wellbore wall. The mobility of the formation fluid is enhanced by reducing the viscosity by heating or introducing a solvent (figure 5). Hot fluid may be injected into the formation either from the surface (Figure 8B) or produced from the tool by, for example, an exothermic reaction of two fluids (Figure 2 and 2a). Heating of the formation fluids may be obtained by a heating means such as resistive heating elements 127, acoustic transducer, electrodes, ultrasonic emitters or induction coils etc. (Figs 9-11). Formation fluids are taken into the tool via the sample port and analysed downhole or at surface. |
