PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide sound attenuation effect while inhibiting enlargement and increase of weight in a muffler for an engine having three or more expansion chambers including an expansion chamber at the most upstream end communicating to an outlet of an exhaust pipe and an expansion chamber at the most downstream end communicating to an inlet of the tail pipe formed inside of a casing, and having the expansion chambers mutually communicate via a communication pipe. SOLUTION: The outlet of the exhaust pipe 12 and an inlet of the communication pipe 30 communicating to the expansion chamber 26 at the most upstream end are opened to same direction in the expansion chamber 26 at the most upstream end. The inlet of the tail pipe 14 and an outlet of the communication pipe 31 communicating to the expansion chamber 27 at the most downstream end are opened to same direction in the expansion chamber 27 at the most downstream end. An outlet of the communication pipe 30 and an inlet of the communication pipe 31 are opened to same direction in the expansion chamber 25 excluding the expansion chambers 26, 27 at the most upstream end and the most downstream end.
