The device (2) has a transport device (24) arranged between a stack forming device (21) and a banding device (27). The transport device transports stacks (101) of flat products (100) made of paper or cardboard from horizontal planes (22, 23), in which the stacks are formed, of the stack forming device to a horizontal plane (28) of the banding device. The transport device includes a transfer device for transferring the stacks to the banding device. The stack forming device includes another transfer device for transferring the stacks to the transport device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a stacking device.
