<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new condensed polycyclic aromatic compound having a fluoranthene skeleton, and a highly efficient and highly durable organic light-emitting device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The condensed polycyclic aromatic compound is represented by general formula [1]. The compound may further bear a substituent group such as an alkyl group, an aryl group or a substituted amino group. R<SB>1</SB>-R<SB>4</SB>are each H or a substituent group such as an alkyl group. The organic light-emitting device is constituted of an anode, a cathode and an organic compound layer sandwiched between the two electrodes, and at least one of the condensed polycyclic aromatic compounds is contained in at least one of the organic compound layers.
