The invention relates to a method for the ambient light detection of a vehicle. The region in front of the vehicle in the direction of travel is detected by means of a sensor unit (10) comprising a flat image sensor (3), and the sensor signals generated by the image sensor (3) are fed to an analysis process. According to the invention, in addition to the image sensor (3), the sensor unit (10) comprises a single photocell (1) which is oriented skyward; the sensor signals (S1) of the photocell (1) are supplied to a first analyzing unit (2) in order to generate a first analysis signal (A1); the sensor signals (S2) of the image sensor (3) are supplied to a second analyzing unit (4) in order to generate a second analysis signal (A2); and the first analysis signal (A1) and the second analysis signal (A2) are fed to a plausibility unit (5), the first analysis signal (A1) being plausibility-checked using the second analysis signal (A2).
