Provided is a technique for assisting in understanding text, wherein questions are provided to promote better understanding of the contents of text being viewed. The present invention identifies a sentence expressing an opinion, from among a plurality of sentences constituting text, and determines: the opinion target, which refers to what the opinion is about, the opinion provider, which refers to the person or organization who provided the opinion, and the attitude polarity of the opinion, which refers to the attitude that the opinion has toward the opinion target, for example, a positive or negative attitude. Then if it is detected that another opinion provider has a different attitude polarity toward the opinion target, the present invention determines that there is a conflict of opinions about the opinion target. Further, based on text segments indicating the reason why each opinion provider has a positive or negative attitude toward the opinion target, the present invention identifies value words, each of which indicates a value affected by the opinion target, and determines the polarity of the effect of the opinion target on the value, that is, whether the opinion target suppresses or promotes the value. The present invention then presents both positive and negative opinions about the opinion target to the person viewing the text, and also generates and presents questions in which opinion provider names and value words are blanked out and therefore must be filled in, and which include, for example, multi-choice questions concerning attitude and effect polarities, so as to assist the person in understanding the text (see Fig. 3C). |
