PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable type double deck elevator of such a configuration that the relative positioning of two cages is varied, wherein the overhead remain small and a drive device to vary the relative positioning may be constructed small. SOLUTION: When a drive device 5 varies the relative positioning of a lower cage 3a and an upper cage 3b through a transmitting mechanism 8, the output end of a rope length adjusting mechanism 7 (7a-7e) changes in an amount corresponding to the movement of the center of gravity of the total weight as the mechanism 7 is structured so that its output end is attached to a hanging rope 2 where the movement of the center of gravity of the total weight relative to the upper cage owing to the movement of the lower cage is made an output displacement, and if viewed from the hanging rope 2 attached to the output end, the center of gravity of the total weight remains unchanged, and this generates a balance of force indirectly, so that equipment loaded in the cage such as drive device may be configured small.
