PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device and an image forming method capable of realizing the optimum performance without degrading the printing throughput of the image forming device by detecting presence/absence of paper sheets in a cassette at the shortest timing. SOLUTION: The distance L1 shorter than the distance L from a paper sheet rear end to the position 11 at which a detection flag 3a is detached is determined when it is assumed that the paper sheet is completely rigid from a tip 10 of the paper sheet waiting position waiting in a cassette 8 by referring to the characteristic of the actual paper sheet (mass, rigidity and environmental atmosphere). By the distance L1, the shortest timing at which presence/absence of the succeeding paper sheets in the cassette can be determined.
