USB CONTROLLER ESD PROTECTION APPARATUS AND METHOD

A USB charging port controller integrated circuit (122) and system (100) are presented for interfacing USB power and data signal with a host circuit (106). The integrated circuit (122) comprises an ESD protection diode (D1), having an anode connected to a data terminal (126) of the integrated circuit (122) and a cathode connected to a positive USB bus voltage terminal (124) for directing ESD transient current from the data terminal (126) to the USB bus voltage terminal (124) for dissipation to an external bus capacitance (C VBUS) connected between the USB bus voltage terminal (124) and a USB ground node on a host circuit board (102).
