PURPOSE: A vehicle speed measuring system and a method thereof are provided to improve the accuracy of speed measuring through a gear shift control unit. CONSTITUTION: A vehicle speed measuring system comprises an electronic control unit(100) and a gear shift control unit. The electronic control unit measures the diameter of a tire in real time. The measured values related with a vehicle driving period are saved. The gear shift control unit is operated based on the measured tire diameter values and a vehicle driving period. The gear shift control unit converts calculated vehicle speed into a driving distance and displays real time speed and driving distance on a cluster.
