AN ACTIVE AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY SYSTEM USING A SHORT RANGE RADAR AND AN IMAGE SENSOR

An active vehicle safety system using a short range radar and an image sensor is provided to secure safety for passengers and comfortable driving environment by supplying image information about the kind and state of obstacles and to cope with a collision with the obstacle actively by operating a safety control device according to direction information of the obstacle. An active vehicle safety system using a short range radar and an image sensor is composed of plural vehicle collision preventing modules(10) transmitting and receiving a radar signal and an image signal for estimating the position of an obstacle, within a millimeter/sub millimeter band range; a central processing unit(20) receiving and processing the position and image information of the obstacle estimated in the vehicle collision preventing module; and a safety control device(40) performing a control function according to the risk on the basis of the estimated position and image information of the obstacle. The vehicle collision preventing module comprises a radar transmitting unit transmitting a radar signal; a radar receiving unit transmitting the reflected radar signal; a signal processing unit estimating the position information of the obstacle on the basis of the received radar signal and outputting direction information for collecting the corresponding image information; and the image sensor of which the direction is controlled according to the output direction information to collect the image information of the obstacle.
