A method of verifying the identity of a user (30) at an authentication server (20) comprising receiving user data relating to a handwritten signature gesture (40) entered by a user at a computing device (34), the user data comprising a plurality of sample points (42), verifying the user data (22) at the authentication server (20) by comparing to reference signature data (26), encoding a verification message within a digital image (46), notifying the user that their identity has been verified on the basis of the user data received from the computing device. The image may be digital image that comprises representation of the signature. Encoding within the image may be based on a pixel or steganography method. In operation the digital image maybe used to sign (38) an electronic document (36) to prevent amendments of the electronic document as part of a digital certificate process. |
