PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deflection of a printing position even when a sheet pickup position is deflected from a normal position in the case where sheets are newly installed. SOLUTION: When a paperless sensor 91 detects that no paper exists on a multipurpose tray after sheets are picked up, a control means 93 memorizes the contents. When a signal for sheet pickup is next sent to the control means 93, the control means 93 starts driving a stepping motor 92 100 ms earlier than normal pickup based on detection of no paper in the previous pickup. By this action, the stepping motor 92 thus starts rotation earlier, so the sheet is carried in the same condition as that having a tip at a normal position even when the tip of the sheet is positioned a little forward the normal position, thereby printing deflection can be prevented.
