PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a satisfactory squareness ratio (Br/Bm) in a longitudinal direction of a tape even when magnetic powder is atomized and suitable for high density recording. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium using granular or elliptical magnetic powder having at least iron and nitrogen as constituent elements, including a Fe<SB>16</SB>M<SB>2</SB>phase and having 10 to 30 nm average particle size as the magnetic powder which constitutes a magnetic layer, when an average particle size of the magnetic powder and a standard deviation value of the particle size are defined as d andσ, respectively, the magnetic powder having aσ/d value in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 is especially used.
