METHOD OF DRIVING PLASMA DISPLAY PANEL AND PLASMA DISPLAY APPARATUS

In the presence of high-luminance image mixed with low-luminance image, it is intended to increase the number of gradations for the low-luminance image and thus attain an enhancement of image quality without inviting any increase of power consumption. One field for displaying of one screen of plasma display panel is composed of multiple subfields. A first electrode is fixed at a given voltage, and selective sustaining discharge is induced only by pulses applied to a second electrode. Thus, multiple-tone display of image is attained. A detection circuit detects whether or not any unwanted subfield not requiring any sustaining discharge ispresent for each display line. When no unwanted subfield is present, a sustaining control circuit induces a preset number of sustaining discharges in each of the subfields. When an unwanted subfield is present, the sustaining control circuit induces sustaining discharges fewer than a preset minimum number of sustaining discharges in at least one of the subfields.
