<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a test pattern and a test chart suitable for a bar code generation system, which generates an appropriate bar-code, which satisfies the requirement of each user, quickly with a minimum consumption of ink and paper. <P>SOLUTION: A test chart 704 has a positive region including test patterns 401 and 402 with a plurality of black bars having a plurality of dot widths by dot, and a negative region including test patterns 501 and 502 with white bars having a plurality of dot widths by dot. The test pattern 402 of the positive region includes a plurality of black bars extending in the longitudinal direction, and the test pattern 401 includes a plurality of black bars extending in the lateral direction.
