An engine comprises a plurality of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) elements or Negative Thermal Expansion (NTE) elements which are heated and cooled by fluid, e.g. within an immersion chamber. The elements are positioned to from a gap between adjacent elements so as to improve heat transfer from a fluid to each element. The wires may be clamped in a spaced condition, or separated by spacing elements (2, figures 7-9) or a U shaped spacer (figure 13). Alternatively a wire spreader could be used (figure 17). The wire ends may be coated with resin or plastic to maintain a gap towards the centre. |
