The present invention relates to a personal protection device, for protecting parts of a user's body in case of fall, comprising: - a jacket (1) wearable by a user provided with at least one inflatable bag or chamber (5); - a compressed gas cylinder (9) intended to be placed in selective fluid communication through an inflation actuator (21) with said bag (5), with the device in an activation condition; - a control unit (8) operatively connected both to the inflation actuator (21) and to the cylinder (9) characterized in that the control unit (8) is operatively connected to at least: - a gyroscope for detecting an inclination of the user's body with the jacket in the worn condition; - an accelerometer for detecting a change in acceleration; the invention further relates to an operating method for said device.
