Provided is a rechargeable lithium battery that includes a positive electrode including a positive active material; a negative electrode including a negative active material; a separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; and an electrolyte solution, wherein the positive active material includes lithium metal oxide and a compound represented by the following Chemical Formula 1 and coated on a surface of the lithium metal oxide, and the separator includes a porous substrate and a coating layer including ceramic and disposed on at least one side of the porous substrate.
Li1+xAlxM2−x(PO4)3 [Chemical Formula 1];In Chemical Formula 1, M is at least one metal selected from Ti, Cr, Ga, Fe, Sc, In, Y, Mg, and Si, and 0<x≦0.7. |

1. A rechargeable lithium battery comprising:
a positive electrode comprising a positive active material; a negative electrode comprising a negative active material; a separator interposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode, the separator comprising a porous substrate and a coating layer comprising a ceramic material disposed on at least one side of the porous substrate; and an electrolyte solution, wherein the positive active material comprises a lithium metal oxide, and a compound represented by the following Chemical Formula 1 on the surface of the lithium metal oxide:
Li1+xAlxM2−x(PO4)3 Chemical Formula 1 wherein M is at least one selected from Ti, Cr, Ga, Fe, Sc, In, Y, Mg, and Si, and 0<x≦0.7. |
