This vehicle control system includes an in-vehicle device equipped in a vehicle, and a portable key possessed by a user. The in-vehicle device is provided with: an in-vehicle device communication unit that communicates with the portable key; and an acquisition unit that acquires vehicle state information reflecting the state of the vehicle. The in-vehicle device communication unit sends the vehicle state information to the portable key. The portable key is provided with: a portable key communication unit that communicates with external devices; an operation unit that includes one or more operation buttons; and an information generation unit that generates operation command information reflecting the operation command set for the operation button if the operation button is operated. The portable key communication unit receives the vehicle state information. The vehicle control system is further provided with a setting unit that sets the operation command for the operation button on the basis of the vehicle state information. |
