PURPOSE: A process for producing cyanine dyes represented by formula 1 are provided in which reaction time is shortened by choosing proper reacting solvent in each step and improving purification method. CONSTITUTION: The process comprises the steps of: dissolving and stirring phenylhydrazine hydrochloride (formula 2) and methyl isopropyl in acetic acid to obtain the compound (formula 3) and followed by refining by reduced pressure distillation method; dissolving the compound (formula 3) in acetonitrile, adding the compound represented by R2X and carrying out N-alkylation to obtain the compound (formula 5), followed by dissolving in water and recrystallizing; dissolving and reacting the compound (formula 5) and glutaconaldehyde-dianyl compound (formula 6) in acetic anhydride, followed by precipitating the product in potassium iodide aqueous solution, and dissolving and recrystallizing with a mixture of ethanol and methylether. In the formula, R1 is H or CH3; R2 is CH3 or n-C3H7; X is I or toxylate ( in R2X and formula 5, X is I); and n is 1 or 2.
