An image processing method and device and a portable terminal using the method and the device are provided to perform backlight correction for images classified as backlight images, thereby reducing time and an amount of operation consumed for image processing. Information on brightness distribution of an image is detected(100). An area where the brightness distribution of the image has a maximum value is detected by using the detected information(110). Based on the detected maximum value area, it is decided whether the image is a backlight image(120). If so, backglight correction is carried out for the image decided as the backlight image(140). When the information on the brightness distribution is detected, brightness data of the image is extracted. The information on the brightness distribution is obtained by using the brightness data.
