NOVEL PDMS-PVP BLOCK COPOLYMERS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) with a polymerizable function for use as hydrophilic wetting agents in contact lenses.

SOLUTION: The first step toward the synthesis of (meth)acrylated PVP copolymers is to generate terminal functional group-containing PVP using azo initiators such as azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) and the like in the presence of chain transfer agents. The resulting terminal functional group-containing PVP is converted to a terminal methacrylate or methacrylamide derivative using methacryloyl chloride, etc.
