A method for controlling an automatic lathe having at least one main spindle and at least one tool rest comprising the steps of preparing data on movement positions of at least one main spindle and at least one tool rest required by a series of machining programs in the form of cum reference data for designating the movement positions as a function of the amount of rotation of the cum, preparing pulse train generating sources for generating respective arbitrary pulse trains, selecting and designating a pulse train generating source for generating a pulse train for specifying the amount of rotation of the cum which is a component of the cum reference data from among the pulse train generating sources with respect to the movement position data, processing the movement position data in the form of cum reference data by using the pulse train generated by the designated pulse train generating source, and controlling the relative feed in the machining programs of at least one main spindle and at least one tool rest.
