<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition exhibiting a cholesteric liquid crystal phase carrying out a display of good contrast and to provide a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition as a display medium. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a liquid crystal component and a chiral material, exhibits the cholesteric liquid crystal phase and has refractive index anisotropy Δn, dielectric anisotropy Δε, a transition point Tc to an isotropic phase and viscosity η (cps) at 20°C satisfying the following conditions, i.e. 0.02<Δn<0.07, 5<Δε<25, 70°C<Tc<100°C and 30<η<100. The liquid crystal composition is held between substrates 11 and 12 at a prescribed thickness and electrodes 13 and 14, insulating films 15 and oriented films 16 are provided on the opposite surfaces of the substrates 11 and 12. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
