PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preceding vehicle detection device and a preceding vehicle detection method for increasing preceding vehicle detecting precision by effectively removing noise components strongly affecting the detection of a yaw rate regardless of presence/no presence of road surface projection/recession. SOLUTION: The preceding vehicle detection device is provided with a switching decision part 13 for deciding whether or not a road on which a vehicle travels is an expressway or a general road, and a filter processing part 7a performs low pass filter processing by a predetermined first cutoff frequency (5 Hz) while the vehicle travels on the expressway, and performs low pass filter processing by a second cutoff frequency (1 Hz) which is lower than the first cutoff frequency while the vehicle travels on the general road.
