A reception device comprising: a first reception unit that receives a broadcast component transmitted on a broadcast wave; a second reception unit that receives a communication component distributed via a communication network; and a control unit that controls operation of each unit that performs a process for selecting an optimal component from a plurality of components that the reception device is able to receive in accordance with control information for selecting the optimal component, wherein the broadcast component and the communication component have a layer structure including a first layer, a second layer, and a third layer in a category to which each of the components belongs, the third layer is for adaptively selecting the broadcast component or the communication component, the second layer is for synthesizing the component adaptively selected in the third layer and a component that is not to be selected in the third layer into a component, the first layer is for selecting a component from the component adaptively selected in the third layer, the component that is not to be selected in the third layer, and the component synthesized in the second layer, and the control unit selects an optimal component in each of the categories by performing at least one of selection and synthesis of the broadcast component and communication component that the reception device is able to receive in accordance with information about the layer structure, the information being included in the control information.
